HRD Faculty, Students Recognized At Research Conference

Human resource development faculty and students attended and made more than 23 paper presentations at the 2008 Academy of Human Resource Development (AHRD) International Research Conference in the Americas held in Panama City, Fla. The academy also recognized the work of several faculty and students from Texas A&M.

Among the many recognized was Larry Dooley, associate professor of HRD in the Department of Educational Administration and Human Resource Development (EAHR), who received the Distinguished Service Award for his committed service to the Academy as a member of the Executive Board of Directors, President-Elect for two years, President for two years and Past President for two years. He was also appointed to serve as International Chief Operating Officer and was charged with coordinating the Academy's activities in Africa, Asia, Europe, and the Middle East and North Africa regions.

Dr. Prakash Nair, former EAHR doctoral student, was awarded the Malcolm Knowles Dissertation Award for his dissertation titled, "Factors Influencing Transfer of Learning among Selected Occupational Safety and Health Administration Trainers in Texas: The Role of Job Stress and Job Satisfaction." His doctoral committee was co-chaired by EAHR faculty Toby Egan and Homer Tolson.

Dr. Brian Joo, former student of EAHR faculty member Gary McLean, was first runner-up for the Malcolm Knowles Dissertation Award. The second runner-up for the award was Dr. Lila Carden, former EAHR doctoral student; her doctoral committee was co-chaired by EAHR faculty Toby Egan and Jamie Callahan. Her dissertation was titled "Pathways to Success for Moderately Defined Careers."

Jia Wang and Toby Egan, both assistant professors in EAHR, and their doctoral students, Matt Upton, director of student services at the George Bush School of Government and Public Service, and Sophie Paul were awarded the Cutting Edge Best Proceedings Paper Award for their papers included in the Academy of HRD 2007 International Research Conference proceedings.

Associate Professor Jamie Callahan received the Monica Lee Outstanding Journal Article of the Year Award for her article co-authored with former EAHR doctoral student, Lila Carden. The article, "Creating leaders or loyalists? Conflicting identities in a leadership development program," was published in Volume 10, Issue 2, of Human Resource Development International.

Gary McLean, senior professor in EAHR, was recognized for editing with Barry Johansen volume 8, number 3, Advances in Developing Human Resources, as a runner-up for the three years 2005-7.  The issue was titled, "Worldviews of Adult Learning in the Workplace" and contained articles written by McLean and colleague, Fred Nafukho, associate professor and program chair of human resource development. McLean also authored an article on "Organization development at the University of Minnesota" published in the ADHR issue that received the outstanding issue award.

Toby Egan, an Academy of HRD board member along with Fred Nafukho and Jamie Callahan, was named Academy Vice President of Research.
